Is it safe to buy real estate in Costa Rica?

The answer is Yes, But make sure you do your homework first. It can be almost like buying property in your home country if you use common sense. However the price for property in Costa Rica is now more expensive then in the USA.
All you have to do is follow the advice below and you should be able to purchase property and minimize the chances of something bad happening.
  1. Have a good time-tested reliable attorney
  2. Make your attorney is 100% bilingual so that you can understand every step of the process of purchasing property.
  3. Have your attorney do the proper “due diligence.” Attorneys who handle real estate transactions can do this to ensure you are making a safe purchase.
  4. Don’t be an impulsive buyer. Also take your time and DO your homework.
  5. DO NOT trust people just because they are from the States, Canada, England or any other English-speaking country. Over the years I have come across many English-speaking scoundrels. So be careful!
  6. Read all of the guidebooks about purchasing real estate in Costa Rica. There are three at the present time. They will give you a basic understanding of the how the local real estate scene works. Be wary of any real estate guidebook that continuously hypes the services of its author. Finally, remember no book should take the place of a good broker and lawyer.
The basic rights of all citizens in Costa Rica are respected by its society which has a well-developed tradition of democratic government. More importantly for foreigners, those same rights are extended in equal measure to all residents of the country.
The facts of life are that the differences in the legal system and ways of doing business in Costa Rica discriminate against those who do not understand them. Unfortunately, there are people who would use that lack of understanding to their advantage. Therefore, anyone wishing to make their home or otherwise invest in Costa Rica, faces a greater possibility of risk in their decision making process than they would in familiar circumstances. That is why you need to hire a Costa Rica Attorney.

Heredia And Cartago Tour

If you are staying in San Jose and want to venture out a bit to visit some of the more quaint towns nearby, you may want to go to the historical towns of Heredia and Cartago as well as visit the gateway town of La Fortuna, which offers access to the Arenal Volcano. Easily accessible by taxi, car, and bus from many points in San Jose, these neighboring towns offer a tourist a chance to become immersed in the local culture, to meet many friendly townsfolk, and to experience a bit of natural life away from the hustle and bustle of the city. When you visit both towns, you are immediately struck by the strong influence of the Catholic Church on the area. This is especially prevalent in Cartago inside the Our Lady of the Angels Basilica. This church is dedicated to the patron saint of Costa Rica, Our Lady of the Angels and offers the visitor a glimpse into a very tranquil sanctuary. The church is also home to many beautiful displays of religious statues, carvings, and art. If you are lucky to be in town during the Christmas season, you may also be able to partake in a town parade that features floats, music, marionettes decorated with Christmas attire, and evening fireworks. It seems as if the whole town comes alive during these celebrations, which also draw people from other towns and local villages who come to enjoy the festive mood and good will offered. In Heredia, a religious undertone can be felt in one of the open-air concerts often held here. Whether you are religious or not, it is a spiritual experience to listen to a gospel concert performed live here. Attending this type of concert, you can feel the interest emanated by the crowd as people gather to contemplate the music as well as the day in general. No place for worrying about the day's troubles, you can get a sense of peacefulness and calm here as you mingle with the crowds who often attend these festivities dressed in their Sunday best.

Cartago Easter Parade

Costa Rica Cultural Festivals around Costa Rica: Cultural Festivals: Santa Cruz, Alajuelita, Puntarenas, San Jose, Escazu, Cartago, Alajuela, Limon and more
Cultural Festivals:
Catholicism is the main religious denomination in Costa Rica and it reflects in the celebrations. Typical "fiestas" take place country-wide all year long. Whether celebrating a Patron Saint's day or a national holiday, these fiestas generally feature lots of good food, music, rides, "topes" (horse parades), and Tico-style bullfights (the bull is teased, but not harmed).Día de los Trabajadores—Labor Day. Parades, marches and the Presidential "state of the union" address to Congress and the people. Cricket matches are a highlight in Puerto Limón.
Fiesta Pattronale Desamparados—Street fair with music, dancing, traditional food and toro a la Tica (bullfights without the bloodshed)
Día de San Isidro Labrador—Escazú and San Isidros all over Costa Rica hold street fairs and parades with music, dancing, traditional food, honoring the patron saint of farmers with blessings of animals and crops.
Fiestas Pattronales San Marcos de Tarrazu, and Coronado—Street fair with music, dancing, traditional food and toro a la Tica (bullfights without the bloodshed)

Easter in Costa Rica (Semana Santa)

Visitors to Costa Rica during Semana Santa (Holy Week or Easter) should expect to share their vacation with Costa Rican holiday-makers, as this is traditionally vacation week for families here. Schools and many public institutions will be closed for the whole week, while businesses unconnected to tourism close on the Thursday and Friday. You should expect a marked increase in traffic on the roads from Wednesday afternoon and especially from early on Thursday leaving the capital for the long weekend and equally congested roads on the following Sunday, as families return to San Jose and the Central Valley to re-start normality on the Monday. If you do not have to travel on these days, then don’t and if you do, be prepared to wait in lines or to move slowly in your chosen direction. Take plenty of provisions too!
If you do want to holiday at the beach – book in advance! During this time of year it is notoriously difficult to find a hotel room at short notice and extra to pay high season prices. While this may seem off-putting, many visitors enjoy their Semana Santa vacation as a chance to socialize with locals and other tourists, as the imposition of the ‘Dry Law’ sends most people back to hotels early in the evening to sup stored supplies and share tales with fellow travelers. You can expect Costa Rican families to come prepared to entertain large families; some even carry a karaoke machine to pass the time!
As residents of the capital leave in droves for the beach, many visitors take advantage of the peace and quiet to explore this part of the country. Although museums and galleries are closed during this period, hotels and restaurants will not be crowded and discounts are a possibility. Tourist attractions, such as Heredia’s InBio Parque, the Serpentarium or Zoo Ave can all be enjoyed without the usual mass of other people.
The Central Valley is the place to be for visitors who want to see traditional Easter celebrations. Many towns hold their own parades with re-enactments of Jesus’ crucifixion and resurrection and holy statues, gaudily decorated and brought out to the streets. The small town of San Joaquin de Flores in Heredia is well-known for its colorful and elaborate Good Friday parade which involves much of the town costumed, drawing many tourists. It is worth going if only to see the Jack-in-a-Box style Jesus on the cross which is used to show the before, during and after of the crucifixion!
Another useful piece of advice for Easter travelers is to prepare for the period of the Ley Seca (Dry Law). Costa Rica, like its neighboring Catholic countries, imposes a prohibition from midnight on the Wednesday of Holy Week until midnight on the Friday. During this period no alcohol can be legally sold, bars are closed and restaurants can only serve soft drinks with meals. If you feel inclined to still sip an Imperial on Good Friday, just make sure to have bought supplies in advance, like many Costa Ricans. Certainly drinking alcohol isn’t illegal!

For more information, and to enter the Natural Awakenings' Farm of Life Health Adventure Sweepstakes, click here.

Secluded high in the cooling mountains above Dominical with views of the Pacific Ocean, Farm of Life offers yoga classes, health counseling, educational retreats, a wide variety of area activities, and a delicious raw food menu featuring fresh produce from their permaculture garden. Guests can enjoy jungle hikes to dramatic waterfalls, horseback riding, whitewater rafting, tours of nearby eco-farms, and excursions to nature parks, local markets, and nearby beaches with great surfing, snorkeling, whale watching, deep-sea fishing, and sea kayaking. The property includes spring-fed pools, an organic farm, mountainside yoga deck with sunset views of the Pacific Ocean, an inviting common house, and delightful hilltop cottages and cabins.
The best part is simply relaxing in this very special mountain retreat with like-minded international guests while learning how to create a healthier lifestyle. Owners Jody and Brian Calvi have a well-deserved reputation for attentive, loving service and skillful health counseling that is devoted to helping guests explore the inner world of personal health while enjoying the peaceful, healing and inspirational natural surroundings.
“We both have cured ourselves of debilitating diseases through raw food diet and lifestyle changes,” says Jody, who was on crutches five years ago due to ever-worsening juvenile rheumatoid arthritis. “We wanted to create a place that was very affordable for everyone to experience and learn what they can to do to create better health, whether they have health issues or simply want a more vibrant, enjoyable life.”
Brian adds, “My healing experience from fibromyalgia/chronic fatigue was helped by attending an expensive raw food retreat in an American city. During our honeymoon in Costa Rica, I realized how special it would be to offer an affordable option for anyone who chooses to explore this healing, raw food lifestyle where one can be immersed in the peace and serenity of nature with clean air, mountain streams, organic farm fresh produce, and a loving vibe. This is the place.
“When people first arrive, we ask them ‘What is your intention?’ We want people to own their experience as much as possible and then leave with a toolbox that they can use. We role model the lifestyle that we teach our guests. While cooked food is available, we teach guests how to prepare delicious raw foods that retain all the nutrients nature intended, and provide counseling to help guests integrate a new way of living fully in mind, body and spirit. We also have daily yoga classes, meditations, and walks to neighboring organic farms that may include visits to neighbors who are living completely off the grid.
Staying at Farm of Life is like being in a family; guests can choose to join us in what we are doing, or not. We not regimented in a schedule. If guests have come for healing, they have to be proactive because we want them to learn how to take this information back with them. It is always in the hands of the guests. We also know that people need to relax and need downtime. Just the peace and quiet and being in nature is healing in itself.”
“Of course, many people just come for a healthy vacation because there is so much to do here, so many activities in the beautiful surroundings,” says Jody. “We have spectacular waterfall hikes in our valley, hiking trails that begin right from the property, and can arrange for a wide variety of daily excursions for whitewater rafting, surfing, nature parks, and more.”
The very special spirit of Farm of Life is best captured in the dozens of loving testimonials that guests have left on TripAdvisor.com that is perhaps best summed up in one line: “I went just for a vacation, but ended up with a life-transforming experience.”
The prize includes shared accommodations for two, ground transportation to and from the San José airport, nightly dinners, and use of the communal kitchen and the farm’s fruits and vegetables to prepare your own breakfast and lunches.
