Their activity is connected with fertile soils, which cover the majority of Costa Rica territory. The highest Costa Rica`s volcano is Irazu, the most active is Arenal and Poas has the second widest crater in the world. (diameter 1.5 kilometers).


Many of them are within the national parks. Costa Rica major volcanic peaks are stratovolcanos. The type of magma that fuels most Costa Rica volcanos is thick, viscous, and so filled with gases that the erupting magma often blasts violently into the air.

The most serious eruption was that of Irazu volcanoe in 1963. It errupted clouds of smoke and ash that kept San Jose in a blanket of ash for two years.

Volcano Orosi The legend has it that in the past on the top of volcano climbed the Indian military group. There was an earthquake. One of them screamed that it`s a sign for the presence of silver. From the depths of the volcano came a powerful, echoing voice replying, 'Plata, no; oro, si.' ('Silver no, Gold Yes.'). It`s crater is covered by forests. The first study of this volcano was made by Carlos Sapper in 1899."

If you do any driving in Costa Rica, you will almost certainly do some traveling on the Pan-American Highway. This is the main artery of Costa Rican travel and is heavily used. However, the main highways are constantly improving in quality and in general are not unpleasant to drive. The roads to the more popular beaches are fairly well kept, but there are pot holes that you would not expect in North America.
 
The biggest problem with driving in Costa Rica isn't the roads, it's the slow-moving vehicles (mostly trucks) that cause delays and the dangerous passes that frustrated drivers make in attempt to overtake them. You will probably have to make a few passes on double yellow lines if you rent a car and want to get anywhere fast, but use caution and drive VERY defensively. As there are few traffic cops in Costa Rica, drivers tend to be a little aggressive in their maneuvers. Roads to more remote locations (Osa Peninsula, Dominical, Monteverde) are in very poor shape and require a very sturdy 4x4. Driving times can vary greatly depending on traffic and road conditions."

Spider monkeys tend to stay high off the ground in the canopy of tropical forests.

Range
The genus of spider monkeys ranges from Southern Tamaulipas in Mexico to Mato Grosso in Brazil. This species formerly was abundant all over Costa Rica and was more abundant in many parts of Central America. Now, due to hunting and deforestation, it is restricted to areas with patches of forest large enough to sustain its troop size. How intensively it was and is hunted depends on the area of Central America; but because it is one of the largest New World primate species, it is more vulnerable to hunting.

Physical Description
This species contains 9 subspecies based on color variation; the color of the back, shoulders, and tail varies from blonde to black depending on subspecies. Costa Rica is home to 2 of these subspecies: A. g. ornatus in the north and A. g. panamensis in the south; this latter subspecies is darker with a reddish brown trunk and back legs, and black tail, forelegs, and the top of its head and shoulders."

Chiggers, wasps, bees, ticks, mosquitoes, and the famous “no-see-ums.” All of these common insects can inflict irritating bites on humans. Responsible use of insect repellent (spraying or applying it away from others who might not want to inhale its fumes as you apply it) or lightweight, long sleeve shirts and pants can help eliminate most of these types of bites.
Visitors will be pleasantly entertained by the variety of butterflies that flutter by and by their differences in size and color. There are sting-less bees, insects that mimic leaves, caterpillars with crazy hairs and spines, huge bioluminescent beetles that make lightening bugs look like specs of dust, spiders that make their homes in burrows and then make a door out of debris, hinging it with silk. These trap-door spiders can open and close their door at will and can keep it closed with force by using their legs and fangs to keep it shut. There are tail-less whip scorpions that do not sting, and butterflies with clear wings that you can see through. Costa Rica is also home to the strongest creature on earth…the Hercules Beetle."
