Costa Rica Gas Prices

In Costa Rica, we only have two types of gas, Regular (OMG) and Super (WTF).

Prices in Costa Rica have been sliding up for some time. Food, of course is one, but that seems to be a world wide issue. I have already ranted about the transit laws and how much a parking ticket can cost, but the thing that really frosts my twinkle is the ridiculous price of gasoline and the seemingly never ending increases.

We just had another increase a few days ago, and now I am paying about $85.00 to fill my tank (Nissan Xtrail, a small SUV).

It has been a while since I actually calculated the price per gallon in dollars. As we use liters here and pay in colones, it takes a couple of calculations to convert to dollars but I have done so here as many of my readers are from North America and are more accustomed to price per gallon."

The Public Services Regulatory Authority (ARESEP) announced Tuesday that national gas prices will improve ¢54 per liter beginning in April. Gas costs have risen 3 occasions therefore far in 2011.

ARESEP’s announcement of a national gas price improve comes at a time when international gas prices are sky-rocketing. Due to last month’s turmoil in Egypt and the ongoing conflict in Libya, nations across the world are seeing heightened prices at the pump.

On Tuesday, the International Power Agency (IEA) announced that exportation of crude oil from Libya will be “out of the market place for a number of months,” which should lead to further escalation in international gas rates.

“Oil infrastructure appears to have been damaged following bombings about Es Sider and Ras Lanuf in current days, heralding a worrying escalation from an oil-sector perspective,” the release from the IEA study. “The IEA continues to monitor the scenario on a close and constant basis, ahead of a seasonal uptick in crude oil and transport fuels demand expected from April onwards.”

According to the IEA, Libyan crude oil exports fell by 195,000 barrels per day in February, which accounted for an estimated one.385 billion barrels throughout the month.

International gas rates could see additional escalations need to the nuclear crisis in Japan worsen and influence the value of globally normal resources.

In Costa Rica, in addition to the ¢54/liter improve on unleaded fuel, the cost of diesel fuel will enhance ¢39/liter and gas for cooking will cost ¢8/liter far more. Super gasoline will be increased from ¢624/liter to ¢680/liter and plus gasoline will increase from ¢608/liter to ¢663/liter.
